Intentional 365

…living an intentional, inspired life

Delighting in the mundane March 29, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — gracieed @ 7:53 am

I walk my dogs pretty much every day and yesterday I noticed that they greet each lawn with a level of excitement that would make you think this was their first walk ever!  We take the same route, see the same people, sniff the same trees, look for the same cats and their enthusiasm never wanes.  And as I was observing this, I wished that I could be like that.

In my efforts to understand why I lack follow-thru, I have discovered that I have lost the skill of delighting in the mundane.  Or I never had it at all and need to cultivate it.  Ellie and Woody are enthralled by the same patch of grass.  Everyday!  I need to be enthralled by the daily actions I need to take everyday.  I need to look at my commitments with new eyes and not give up on them because they are the same everyday.  Of course, they’re the same everyday, they’re commitments!  Daily promises that I make to myself to achieve a long range goal.  The goals don’t happen without the daily actions.

So I’m off to walk my pack of two.  Off to find delight in the little patch of grass just outside our door.  The same patch of grass that is there everyday.  Because you never know what you might find.

Wanting to be more serious March 28, 2011

I want to be more serious about blogging than I have been.  I want to be more serious about completing projects than I have been.  I want to be more serious about exercise and diet than I have been.  The trouble is I think I’m trying to be serious about toooooo many things.

I’ve discovered that it’s easier to talk about doing than it is to do.  It’s easier to plan and make lists than it is to do the things on the lists.  I know this isn’t earth-shattering info, but it’s important that I own up to it and move forward.

So here’s my do-over.  I came out of the gate at the beginning of the year with grand ideas, 7 of them, in fact.  Let’s review:

1.  Lose 30 pounds.  maybe lost 1 pound, but not sure
2.  Run a 5K.  haven’t even starting jogging
3.  Blog at least twice a week.  nope
4.  Knit 1 square per week for Knit-a-Square  completed 1
5.  Learn to play O Holy Night on the guitar.  have plunked on the strings 3 times
6.  Read through the whole Bibleam happy to say I’ve actually been doing this
7.  Finish “One Little Word” book.  completed January & half of February

In my efforts to figure out why I’m not following through, I discovered part of the problem.  Partly, my goals need to be expressed as actionable, daily steps.  Partly, I need to not have so many goals.

So, I redefined by 7 goals:

1.  Drink 8 glasses of water every day.
2.  Walk 30 minutes every day.
3.  Work on blog posts 20 minutes every day.  Post when completed.
4.  Knit 1 hour every day.  Begin square catchup after 28 Alaska hats are finished.
5.  Practice 30 minutes on the guitar every day.
6.  Read Bible verses first thing in the morning.
7.  Work on “One Little Word” book 1 hour every Saturday.

I haven’t reduced the number of goals because I think these are all attainable.  I just need to quit adding other activities to my life so I can concentrate on these goals.  I started out by saying I wanted to be more serious.  Mostly I just want to feel like I’m achieving something I started out to do.

So here’s to do-overs…

I recently (5 days ago) signed up for Project 365.  Here’s a description:   The 365 project is a photography project where you document a year of your life by taking a daily photo. We want to help you build a picture of the little day to day things that make your life so special and unique. Everyone can take part and join in! All you need is a camera.

One of my life list items is ‘to take more pictures’ and when I discovered this project it seemed to make sense.  I carry my camera with me and have even taken a photo with my phone and uploaded the picture with email.  Really cool!

Here are my pictures so far…  and I will warn you there are a few dogs…

Day 1 - One cute dog!

Day 2 - Knitting with Cathy @ Starbuck's

Day 3 - Basket O' Yarn

Day 4 - Ellie being unusually still for this photo op

Day 5 - Woody and Ellie... love these guys. (taken with my phone)

When I last posted at “Today I Made…”, it was the beginning of 2011 and I had put my list of 7 goals for 2011.

As Maria from the Sound of Music sings…  “Let’s start at the very beginning…”

The seven goals I have for 2011 stem out of a decision to live the next 12 months (and the rest of my life) with intentionality.  In fact, I am going to be participating in an online class called “One Little Word”.  Here is an excerpt from the instructor’s opening remarks.

Because words are important to me, I always like to start out a lot of my classes with a quote or something to think about. I came across this one, which is from Confucius. It says, “Words are the voice of the heart.” I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately as I’ve been getting ready for this class and as I’ve been planning out the different prompts that we’re going to have throughout the year, and I loved the visual of this. The kind of idea of words coming out of the heart and that words give voice to our hearts. It’s just something that I really enjoyed and wanted to make sure that I shared with you as we begin the class this year.”  -Ali Edwards

And my word for 2011 is INTENTIONAL – Done or made or performed with purpose and intent.

And the first Intentional act for Jan 1, 2011, is to make a list of seven goals I want to accomplish by Dec 31, 2011.  (In no particular order) and SMART:  specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.

1.  Lose 30 pounds.
2.  Run a 5K
3.  Blog at least twice a week
4.  Knit 1 square per week for Knit-a-Square
5.  Learn to play O Holy Night on the guitar
6.  Read through the whole Bible
7.  Finish “One Little Word” book

So this is my list of seven…  What are yours?
